Umrah is the most spiritually rewarding journey that every Muslim wants to undertake at least once in their life. No doubt the rewards of this pilgrimage stay the same throughout the year, excluding the same sacred month of Ramadan, when the rewards multiply. But the conditions to perform the pilgrimage don’t remain the same throughout the year. Your budget and other preferences determine the best time for you to perform the pilgrimage. Some people want to know when Umrah is least crowded, and others are curious about the cheapest time to perform this pilgrimage.
One of the main factors affecting the Umrah experience is the crowding at Masjid al-Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi. Millions gather at these sacred sites for their pilgrimage. Heavy crowds affect comfort, focus, and ease of performing the Umrah rituals. Some people don’t mind the peak season crowds, while some, especially those travelling with families or the elderly, prefer a quieter time at the pilgrimage sites. We are here with a month-by-month guide to help you understand the crowd patterns at the holy sites of Makkah and Madinah.

ToggleMonth-by-Month Guide on Umrah Crowd Patterns
Here is a month-by-month guide to crowd patterns in Makkah and Madinah.
January
This is the month when the Umrah crowds are moderate to low. So, if you want to have a quieter Umrah experience, you can never go wrong planning your spiritual retreat in January. Another perk of performing Umrah during this time is that the weather is much more pleasant. You will have a peaceful Umrah experience during this time, making it ideal if you are travelling with your family or the elderly.
February
Ramadan is expected to fall in February 2027. Therefore, you will encounter peak-season crowds if you visit the pilgrimage sites during this time. Before the shift of Ramadan this month, this used to be a quiet month for the pilgrimage with pleasant weather. But it will change in the coming years as long as Ramadan continues to fall in the month.
March
March is another month of moderate crowds. However, for the past few years, the sacred month of Ramadan has fallen in this month, making it the peak season to perform Umrah. As Ramadan falls every year, Ramadan 2027 will be in February and the first ten days of March. Therefore, mid-March can be much quieter at the pilgrimage sites. The weather is also still manageable this month.
April
As the peak season crowds disperse, April becomes much quieter and more budget-friendly for Umrah pilgrims. With travel demand stabilising, prices drop and the Umrah crowd thins. This is one of the least crowded for Umrah.
May
You can expect moderate crowds at the start of May. Even though the weather is starting to warm up this month, the crowd flow is still good to moderate. Also, this is the pre-Hajj time. The first half of the month is perfect for an Umrah in moderate crowds. In the second half of the month, Umrah will become increasingly restricted as Hajj pilgrims begin arriving in the country.
June
June is not one of the busiest months for Umrah because of the extreme heat. It is one of the summer months in the country. And the desert heat of Makkah and Madinah is not usually bearable, especially for UK travellers like yourself. Therefore, if you cannot deal with harsh weather, this might be the ideal time for Umrah for you, even though this is one of the less crowded months.
July & August
The other two summer months with extreme heat are July and August. Fewer pilgrims visit the sacred sites during this time due to challenging physical conditions and high temperatures. Don’t go for an Umrah during these months if you are not used to extreme heat, even if the crowd conditions are suitable for you.
September
September is one of the quietest times to go for an Umrah. This is the time when schools worldwide reopen, and pilgrims return home. Also, the heat might not be as intense as in the summer months. Therefore, it is a good time for a peaceful Umrah.
October
October also experiences low to moderate crowds in Makkah and Madinah. The weather starts getting more pleasant during this month. Crowds also start returning eventually, but you still get a good window for a peaceful Umrah. So, if you want to have pleasant weather and fewer crowds, start looking for the perfect October Umrah packages.
November
The weather is ideal for an Umrah in November. But crowds are not as thin. You can expect moderate crowds in the holy cities during this month. Popular travel seasons begin during this month.
December
December is one of the peak seasons for Umrah because of school holidays. Many families plan their Umrah during this time because of these holidays. Also, it is one of the winter months, making the weather very pleasant. This is why December Umrah deals sell out fast and are always in high demand.
Summing Up
Crowd patterns at the pilgrimage vary throughout the year. Sometimes, performing an Umrah is more popular than the others. Ramadan is one of the most highly rewarding times to perform the voluntary pilgrimage. Therefore, it is also one of the peak seasons. Other peak seasons include December. Other months experience low to moderate crowds, varying in every month. It is time for you to decide which month will be best for your pilgrimage.
