Roadmap
This is how to learn Quran for beginners in five stages, the same order madrasas have used for generations. The first three stages happen in the Qaida, and the last two in the Mushaf.
01
The 28 letters, their shapes at the start, middle and end of a word, and where each sound comes from.
02
Fatha, kasra and damma, the small marks that turn a letter into a sound like ba, bi or bu.
03
Tanween, sukoon, shaddah and long vowels, until you can read Quranic words without stopping.
04
Reading short surahs of Juz Amma from the Mushaf, slowly, while your teacher corrects each word.
05
Ghunnah, qalqalah and madd, applied to real verses as you read, not memorized from a chart.
Hard Sounds
Most Arabic letters have an English match. These five sounds do not, so your teacher spends extra time on them early.
| Letter | Name | How It Is Made | Often Confused With |
|---|---|---|---|
| ع | Ayn | Squeezed from the middle of the throat | Alif (a plain “a”) |
| ح | Haa | A strong breathy h from the throat | Ha (ه), the light English h |
| خ | Khaa | A rough sound like “ch” in Scottish loch | Kaf (ك) |
| ق | Qaf | From the very back of the tongue, heavy | Kaf (ك) |
| ض | Daad | A heavy d using the side of the tongue | Dal (د) or Dhaa (ظ) |
Heavy letters such as saad, daad, taa, dhaa and qaf are said with the back of the tongue raised, which gives them a deeper, fuller sound.

Transliteration
Good Quran classes for beginners teach the Arabic script from the first day. English spelling cannot show the ayn, the heavy letters or a doubled shaddah.
A word learned from Latin letters is often learned wrong, and the mistake is then repeated in every Salah. Reading the real script avoids that from the start.
Common Mistakes
Anyone trying to learn to read Quran for beginners meets the same few errors. Your teacher watches for each of them.
None of these means you are a slow learner. They are normal steps in a new skill, and each one fades with steady correction.
Comparison
Most online Quran classes for beginners start with one of two primers, and each matches a different style of printed Quran.
| Question | Noorani Qaida | Madani Qaida |
|---|---|---|
| Script | Indo-Pak, with bold letters and extra vowel marks | Uthmani, the style of the Madinah Mushaf |
| Matches which Quran? | The 13 or 15-line Mushaf used in South Asian homes | The Mushaf printed by the King Fahd Complex |
| Common with | Pakistani, Indian and Bangladeshi families | Arab and Gulf-trained teachers |
| Our course | Yes, our beginner course | Ask us before you book |
| Choose it if | Your family reads an Indo-Pak Mushaf | Your family reads the Madinah Mushaf |
Both teach the same letters, vowels and rules. Pick the one that matches the Quran on your shelf at home.

You can learn letter shapes from a book or app, but correct recitation has always been learned by reading to a teacher, a method called talaqqi. Someone has to hear you to fix your sounds.
The easiest way to learn Quran online for beginners is short lessons several times a week, one teacher, the Qaida before the Mushaf, and a few minutes of reading aloud every day.
No. Reading and reciting the Quran is a separate skill from Arabic grammar. Many fluent reciters never studied grammar, and you can add meaning later through a translation course.
Yes. Accuracy comes before speed, and teachers prefer a slow, correct reading over a fast one with mistakes. Speed builds on its own once letters and vowels become automatic.
Yes. Because Al-Fatiha is recited in every rakah, teachers often teach it alongside the Qaida so you can pray with it correctly while your reading improves.
