The Arabic word ” tajwid ” means to improve, make better Arabic word for elocution or the right pronunciation. With respect to Islamic teachings, it is a complete set of rules established by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to study the vocabulary and speech used in reading the Qur’aan
The rules of recitationand Tajwid apply to the Holy Quran as our beloved Prophet (PBUH) himself read, recited and pronounced the words of the Koran with Tajwid. Therefore it is our duty to follow his Sunnah.
Allah says in the Qur’aan:
Do ye enjoin right conduct on the people, and forget (To practice it) yourselves, and yet ye study the Scripture? Will ye not understand? (Surah 2 Verse 44)
This verse shows the importance of reciting the Holy Scripture with perfection and clarity. In another citation He says:
Do they not then earnestly seek to understand the Quraan, or are their hearts locked up by them?( Surah 47 Verse 24)
Verily in this is a Message for any that has a heart and understanding or who gives ear and earnestly witnesses (the truth). ( Surah 50 Verse 37)
Although in some countries where Arabic is the common language, Children memorize Quran and also learn it with the translation, meaning and tafseer. However in other places, it is observed that parents prefer to put their children in Koran schools so that they may memorize Quraan, They assume that later on, as they continue to grow and learn, the children can themselves study the meaning of the Holy words and figure out the message given in the verses.
