What Tafseer Is

What Is Tafseer?

Tafseer is the explanation of the Quran. It brings together the meaning of the words, the occasion of revelation, called asbab al-nuzul, and the lessons scholars have drawn from each verse.

Classical scholars wrote major works of Tafseer, including Tafsir al-Tabari, Tafsir Ibn Kathir and Tafsir al-Qurtubi. Tafsir Ibn Kathir in particular is widely read in English translation today.

Like many classical works, it explains the Quran first through other verses and through hadith, an approach known as tafsir bil-mathur.

Tafseer for Women

Can Women Study Tafseer With a Female Teacher?

Yes. Tafseer classes for women are taught one-to-one by a female teacher, so you can ask personal questions freely and discuss how a verse applies at home.

Many mothers start with the Tafseer of Juz Amma, so they can explain the short surahs their children are memorizing. See our female teacher page for more about learning with a woman teacher.

Comparison

A Tafseer Class or Reading a Tafseer Book Alone?

Many students start by reading a Tafseer book, such as an English edition of Tafsir Ibn Kathir, on their own.

A book is a good companion, but a teacher keeps you going and stops misunderstandings early. Many students use both, reading ahead in the book and bringing their questions to class.

Questions

What Else Do Students Ask About Studying Tafseer?

Still have a question? Our team answers on WhatsApp and will help you pick the right course and time.

Which Tafseer suits a beginner?

A beginner usually does well with a clear, shorter Tafseer read alongside a teacher. Your teacher draws on established classical works and explains them simply, so you do not need to choose a book first.

Is there an online Quran Tafseer course free of charge?

Free recorded lectures and mosque circles exist and are worth attending. Structured one-to-one lessons are paid, but you can take your first week with us free to see whether the course suits you.

Do I need to know Arabic to study Tafseer?

No. Lessons are taught in English. Reading the Arabic text helps you follow along, so most students learn to read the Quran first, even slowly.

Will my teacher give me religious rulings?

No. Tafseer classes explain the Quran and the lessons scholars draw from it. For personal rulings, our teachers will advise you to ask a qualified scholar or mufti you trust.

Can children study Tafseer?

Yes, in a simple form. Children enjoy the stories and lessons of Juz Amma and of surahs like Yusuf, explained at their level, usually alongside their reading or Hifz lessons.

How is this different from learn quran tafseer online videos?

A video speaks to thousands of viewers at once and cannot answer you. In live Quran Tafseer classes online, your teacher explains at your level, answers your questions and checks your understanding.
